The Jesus College Network
Abstract:
The constitution (`the constitution') of the Jesus College Network,
a society based in Jesus College to further the understanding
and use of computers in the College and the university as a whole, is
herein described compatibly with the University of Cambridge Society
Guidelines.
The Jesus College Network (`the society') aims to provide
education for all those members of the university that wish it in the
art and science of using computers, whether it be for academic or
recreational purpose.
The society shall promote and participate in teaching its members
the efficient and effective use of computers; further, the
society aims to teach its members not only how to use computers
but also to maintain them. Therefore, the society shall teach
those members who wish to be taught to administer such machines as are
available for the society as a whole to maintain.
In this fashion, the society shall ensure that there remains in
perpetuity a body of technical expertise among the student membership
of Jesus College, and of Cambridge in general.
The society shall use such powers as its members and the Jesus College
Students' Union (`the JCSU') as a whole allow it to provide
computational services. The current set of services is not part of the
constitution, but is determined by the officers of the society in
consultation with the JCSU, and will be published at the AGMs and from
time to time at the discretion of the committee or at the request of
the majority of the members.
The officers of the society are:
- the President;
- the Secretary;
- the Senior Treasurer;
- the Junior Treasurer;
The officers of the society, together with anyone the committee should
deem it necessary to coopt (current posts are detailed in schedule
A), make up the committee of the society. The rôle of
the committee is to determine the policy of the society and manage the
efforts of the membership. The society is required to coopt the JCSU
computing coordinator onto the committee if it is carrying out work on
behalf of the JCSU.
Membership of the society is open to all members of the
university. There will be a membership subscription fee, to be set and
adjusted as necessary by the Committee, required from members who are
not also members of Jesus College, unless specifically waived by the
committee.
There shall be one Annual General Meeting of the society every
year, of which details shall be circulated to the members of the
society twenty-one days in advance, whose purpose is to elect
committee members for the following year. Nominations for the posts
must have been received by the Secretary by midnight fourteen days
before the meeting. The committee members are elected in one ballot,
or, in the event of a tie, by the casting vote of the current
president.
An Extraordinary General Meeting may be called by any ten members for
the purpose of amending the constitution of the society1 or
the incumbents on the committee. Any change to the constitution must
be approved by a two-thirds majority of the members present to take
effect.
The society is funded from some or all of the following sources:
- Jesus College Students' Union;
- Subscriptions from those members not of Jesus College;
- Jesus College;
- Corporate Donors.
All monies shall in the first instance be placed in the society
account, and shall then be spent in accordance with the aims of the
society.
No monies shall be accepted by the society from any corporate donor
seeking to limit the freedom of action of the society.
The Junior Treasurer, working in conjunction with the Senior
Treasurer, shall prepare a bill of accounts for each year,
which shall be deemed to end on 30 June. Further, the Junior Treasurer
shall be responsible for keeping an inventory of the assets of the
society.
In the event of the dissolution of the society, any assets
belonging to the society shall be turned over to the Jesus
College Students' Union.
