Signing up to NTLWorld under Linux
-
Change to root using su
-
Run pppconfig
-
Select Create
-
Type ntlsignup
-
Select dynamic
-
Select PAP (if you find that this doesn't work, then try using chat instead - the defaults given ought to work).
-
For the username, enter p1autoreg (that's p-one-autoreg, not p-ell-autoreg)
-
For the password, enter 6661066
-
Leave the modem port speed as it is
-
Choose tone
-
For the phone number, enter 0800 5190150 (BT users - if this doesn't work, try 1263 0800 5190150)
-
Choose the serial port your modem is on
-
Select Finished
-
Exit pppconfig and type pon ntlsignup
-
Once the connection is established, you will now be on the NTL network. Note that you will not be able to access any machines except those required for the signup process - using the above username and password does not give you free access to NTLWorld without a CD.
-
Go to https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi/candy and follow the signup instructions there. You will need your NTLWorld CD in order to obtain the ID numbers requested. At the end of the process, you will be sent a file and the server will wait for a response. Registration is complete at this point and you aren't going to send a response, so save the file (which will contain your username and password) and proceed to the next step. (If the previous URL doesn't work, try https://62.253.162.131/cgi/candy instead)
-
Type poff in order to disconnect
-
Rerun pppconfig and create a new connection called ntlworld. This time the phone number is 0800 5190100 (BT users - if this doesn't work, try 1263 0800 5190100) and the username and password you were given during the signup process.
-
Connect to NTLWorld by typing pon ntlworld
-
And that's it. The SMTP server is smtp.ntlworld.com, the POP3 server is pop.ntlworld.com and the news server is news.ntlworld.com. DNS servers, should you need to add them manually, are 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100. You ought to be able to figure out how to set up your applications software.
